The Rock was my first ever Public Art Commission, during the second year of my university degree. It is an abstracted form from a massive Marble boulder which was the brief for the work. The grain size of the marble is very large and this made it a very challenging piece. In fact it was very satisfying, as a 18 year old, to prove all the local stonemasons wrong, as they said it was not possible to carve marble with that course a crystal size!
The Rock was named by the Students at James Cook University in Cairns, as they fondly recall “Meeting at the Rock”.
